Leopard cub run over in Guwahati city
July 28: A leopard cub was run over by a speeding vehicle on the approach road of Guwahati’s Saraighat bridge on Tuesday night. While the authorities have not been able to trace the driver, the leopard cub died on the spot.
Traffic personnel of Jalukbari informed forest personnel of Khanamukh Beat Office, who arrived at the spot and took away the dead cub.
Forest personnel said the one-and-a-half-year-old cub might have come either from the nearby Kamakhya temple hilltop or the Jalukbari notified Reserve Forest. A post mortem was conducted on Wednesday and it was later cremated. “The post-mortem report revealed that the cub suffered a profuse brain haemorrhage caused by an injury to the head,” said a forest official.
The hillocks encircling Guwahati are natural habitats of leopards. Guwahati shares its boundary with the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary, and a number of notified Reserve Forests — Fatasil, Jalukbari, Kalapahar, Gorbhanga etc.
