Leopard cat ran over by a vehicle at Katigorah, found dead on the road
Dec. 28: Not only human beings, animals are too killed by the speeding vehicles and especially tippers and trucks on main roads and highways. On Tuesday, one such incident was reported from Katigorah. A leopard cat was found dead on the street. The scientific name of the species is Prionailurus Bengalensis.
The locals spotted the creature lying on the middle of the road, who initially thought it to be a cub of a tiger and got scared. On close examination, they found that the creature was dead. They suspected that a speeding vehicle might have ran over it, while the creature was trying to cross the road. The forest department was then informed about this incident, who came to the spot and took the dead animal along with them.
Informing about this creature, Professor Parthankar Choudhury of the Department of Ecology and Environment Science of Assam University informed that the creature belong to the species Prionailurus Bengalensis, which in common language is identified as Leopard Cat. He further added that this creature has been listed as that of least concern on the IUCN Red List in 2002. He further added that the presence of this animal in Borail Range is well documented.
