Kiron Sashi Women’s Cell of G C College Celebrated International Women’s Day
Way2barak, March 19 : International Women’s Day was celebrated by the Kiron Sashi Women’s Cell of Gurucharan College on 16th March, 2023 in the Teachers’ Assembly Hall. Prof. Atri Deshmukhya of the Department of Physics, Assam University was invited as the Guest Speaker to speak on this year’s IWD theme- “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality”.
Vice Principal, Dr. Gopa Sinha, Coordinator of the IQAC, Dr. Apratim Nag and President of Kiron Sashi Women’s Cell, Dr. Ruma Paul were also present on the dais. The programme began with a floral felicitation of the guests followed by the college song and a Bharatnatyam performance by Mr. Jyotikesh Sinha, a student of 2nd semester. Dr. Debipreeta Dutta, Secretary of KSWC delivered the Welcome Address. The peer reviewed journal of the cell, “Kiran Sashi”, edited by Dr. Kh. Hemabati Singha of the Department of Manipuri was also released on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Gopa Sinha highlighted the very nuanced issues of discrimination faced by women on an everyday basis. Dr. Apratim Nag, in his speech, brought forth from the pages of history the contributions of some dynamic and benevolent women who were instrumental to the growth of G.C. College. Dr. Ruma Paul spoke in brief about the various initiatives undertaken by the Kiron Sashi Women’s Cell for the upliftment of women, children and students within the college as well as in the vicinity.
Speaking on the theme, Prof. Atri Deshmukhya presented the various aspects of gender bias coded into technology products, apps and digital skills education sector. She emphasized on the provision of better access to technological tools to women, more inclusivity for women in STEM fields and greater participation of women in leadership and policy making roles in order to bridge the digital gender divide. The lecture session was followed by an interaction session with the students.
The second part of the event was a cultural programme where several students presented their song and dance performances. As part of an extended celebration of International Women’s Day, the Kiron Sashi Women’s Cell had also organised a singing and dance competition in the folk and semi-classical categories on the 11th of March, 2023. The Women’s Day programme on Thursday winded up with the prize distribution ceremony of the competition.
Dr. Deepa Nath, Assistant Professor of Botany was the anchor for the main event while the prize distribution ceremony was hosted by Dr. Sehnara Begum Choudhury, Librarian of the college. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks being proposed by Dr. Begum Ayesha Sultana Laskar, Assistant Professor of the Department of Persian.
