November 16: The journalists of Karimganj boycotted the state level celebration of National Press Day which was organised at Silchar Banga Bhavan. They alleged discrimination by the government towards them and also raised slogans and demanded an official explanation.
Airing their grievance, the journalists said, “Today on this special day, we have become bound to boycott the National Press Day programme organised by the Assam Government at Silchar. This is because of the faulty decisions taken by Sajjadul Hussain Choudhury, DIPRO of Karimganj. Ignoring the senior journalist, he has given felicitation to those who are new in the field of journalism.”
Another journalist said that it is due to the present DIPRO that the senior journalists of Karimganj has still not got the Press recognition card. He said, “It is a strange thing going on here. Those who are proof readers or machine operators, they were given the recognition cards while the actual journalists were deprived. We want to know on what basis is the DIPRO allotting the press cards to these people?”
It is for these reasons that the journalists of Karimganj boycotted the government programme of National Press Day at Silchar. However, on the occasion of National Press Day, the journalists of Karimganj took an unique and wonderful initiative to create awareness among the two wheeler riders for wearing helmet. They also distributed chocolates to the riders.
