Jookto to organise Facebook live discussion on Sylhet Partition on 7 July
July 6: On the 73rd anniversary of the Sylhet referendum preceding India’s partition in 1947, JOOKTO has organised a Facebook Live discussion on “Sylhet Partition- the forgotten epoch of India’s partition” with two well known scholars who have been working on the subject from various dimensions. The discussion will be held on 7 July 2020 at 8 PM and the link for the same is www.facebook.com/jooktoindia
The Sylhet referendum undertaken on 6-7 July 1947 has not only resulted in the district of Sylhet then in Assam going to then East Pakistan now Bangladesh but has also uprooted many people and impacted a majority of the Hindu Bengali community that was doing well in terms of economy and culture. Various aspects of the referendum have been controversial, the most being the tea tribes not being allowed to vote. The impact of the referendum is still being felt in many of the issues that creep up in North East India regularly.
The two distinguished panelists are Dr Malini Bhattacharjee, Assistant Professor, Azim Premji University Bangalore who holds a Ph.D in Political Science from from JNU Delhi and Dr Binayak Dutta, Assistant Professor NEHU Shillong who holds a Ph.D in History from NEHU and also is an LLB. The discussion will be moderated by Mr Subimal Bhattacharjee Director JOOKTO.
