It’s shame for Silchar! More than 800 bottles of cold drinks & 700 water bottles ‘stolen’ from DSA by youths during morning walk!
Strict action should be taken against them: Bijendra Prasad Singh
March 27: Amid dazzling lights and hi-tech digital display accompanied by the state-of-the art stage, Prag Cine Awards 2022 kick started on Saturday evening at Silchar DSA. The programme was in the open field of DSA where large number of spectators along with who’s who gathered there to witness 1st of its kind award ceremony in Silchar. However, sudden rainfall accompanied by storm played the role of spoilsport and the show had to be stopped abruptly.
But it’s a common saying, “Nero fiddles while Rome burns.” The same happened in DSA Silchar. A food stall “South Corner” was set up in the field by one Arnab Kar where apart from packaged food items, cold drinks and packaged drinking water bottles were available for the spectators who came to watch the Prag Cine Awards 2022. However, with the sudden spell of torrential rainfall, chaos resulted in the ground where rain water accumulated. Certain food items stocked by the stall also got wasted.
Meanwhile, around 800 bottles of cold drinks of various brands and more than 700 bottles of packaged drinking water were left unsold in the stall. As the ground became muddy due to accumulation of rain water, it was almost impossible for the owner of the food stall to take out his belongings from the field at night, which included cold drinks, water bottles, five deep freezers. The owner of the stall being unable to take out these items at Saturday night decided to put all bottles of cold drinks and packaged water inside the 5 deep freezers. It was then the owner also locked the 5 freezers, which he planned to take out from the field next morning, that is, on Sunday morning.
However, on Sunday night, at around 10.40 PM, Arnab Kar, who set up that food stall gave a post in his Facebook wall wherein along with photographic and video evidences he shared that the fact that some persons who usually go for morning walk at DSA Silchar were openly “stealing the bottles of cold drinks and packaged drinking water.”
Arnab Kar wrote, “More then 800 bottles of cold drinks and 700 bottles of packaged drinking water bottles which costs approximately Rs 50,000 were stolen and also the 5 deep freezers were broken and damaged (the repairing cost pf which will be around Rs. 75,000 ) at DSA on Sunday early morning by some people who went there for morning walk. After getting necessary permission from Prag News Channel and after making requisite payment to Silchar DSA, I had set up that stall there. But unfortunately, boys who seemed to belong to well-to-do families stole all these items breaking the lock of the deep freezers and also thereby damaging these items.”
Speaking to way2barak, Arnab Kar further stated, “This is indeed a shameful incident. These few people has shamed the inhabitants of Silchar by their act. I have collected the video footage of the act of robbery by these people who goes for morning walk at DSA and involved in stealing. I request the authority to take necessary and strict action against those who are health conscious but carry zero social consciousness. I am attaching the video and some pictures for evidence. Some of them even stole tea cups.”
Reacting to the post of Arnab Kar, Bijendra Prasad Singh, General Secretary of DSA Silchar wrote, “On Behalf of Silchar DSA I would like to request you to Go For an FIR in Sadar Thana immediately….. Because u have enough Evidence against them….. I want to clear one thing that in every Morning we open the Main Gate for the citizens of Silchar….. For Morning Walk and Exercise….A strict Action should be taken against them…..”
Arnab Kar also informed that on the basis of the video evidence, he would lodge an FIR at Silchar Sadar Police Station on Monday. In a sarcastic note, Arnab said, “I further announce that if the culprits are caught, then I will gift them all a ‘get well soon card’ because they are mentally sick and also gift them each 50 cold drinks and 50 mineral water bottles.”
What happened with Arnab Kar is indeed a matter of great shame for the people of Silchar. Those involved in this incident of robbery should be brought to book. It needs mention here that Arnab Kar runs a food joint named, “South Corner” at Rangirkhari and during the pre-Covid times, he came to limelight after offering full meal to the people at only Rs.5. He continued this service for some months together. However, with the onset of Covid pandemic and subsequent lockdown, Arnab had to discontinue this good gesture towards the poor and downtrodden.
