Invoking Lachit Barphukan, Dr. Rajdeep Roy gives strong warning to ‘tukde tukde gang’

June 25: Well, this was his debut speech in the Lok Sabha. Yet while listening to him speak, it seemed that he spoke like a seasoned politician. Yes, he is Dr. Rajdeep Roy, the newly elected Member of Parliament from Silchar constituency. On Tuesday, Dr. Rajdeep Roy rose to the occasion and spoke in Motion of thanks to the Presidential address.

It was an extempore deliberation by Dr. Rajdeep Roy and in the Chair was Rajendra Agarwal. It needs mention here that Mr. Agarwal was the Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 (CAB). Dr. Roy addressing Rajendra Agarwal in the Chair praised his role as the Chairman of JPC formed during Modi Government 1.0. Quoting the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, he said, “If law is inadequate in this respect, law needs to be changed and we should protect people whose forefathers fought for freedom of our country.” The passage of CAB will be the atonement for the sufferings million of people undertook during partition.

He then went on to highlight the attention provided to his home constituency Silchar by drawing comparison between the regimes of Dr. Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India. Dr. Roy said, “We also had a Prime Minister for 10 years who represented our state but we do not have on record how many visits he made in Guwahati & entire Northeast, but at least I can proudly say my Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Silchar four times during his 5 years tenure.”

Dr. Rajdeep Roy ended his speech by quoting Lachit Borphukan. He went on to say in Assamese how during the fight with the Mughals, Lachit slained his own maternal uncle for betrayal. Lachit said, “My Uncle is not greater than my country.” Saying so, Dr. Roy gave a gentle warning to the ‘tukda tukda gang’. He expressed surprise as to how the sympathisers of that gang ever get the courage to do so.
