International Seminar on Border Trade organised by Commerce Dept, AU

way2barak, March 2 : The Department of Commerce, Assam University, Silchar organised a two days International Seminar on “Border Trade between India and Bordering Countries: Problems and Prospects” sponsored by Indian Council of Social Science research (ICSSR) on 2nd and 3rd March. The inaugural ceremony started at 9:30 AM in the morning at the Bipin Chandra Pal auditorium Hall. Vice Chancellor of Assam University, distinguished guests, delegates, professors and students of the university attended the inaugural function. The seminar started with the welcome address deliberation by Professor Parag Shil, Head, Department of Commerce, Assam University. He extended a warm welcome to all the dignitaries and participants contributing in this seminar from across the Globe. All the dignitaries lit the ceremonious lamp and the programme gathered momentum with a welcome song by the students. Professor Rajmani Singha, Department of Commerce, Manipur University was the chief guest of the programme. He was felicitated by the Vice Chancellor following which, he briefly addressed the gathering. Two guests of honour, Professor Muhammad Shariat Ullah, Professor in university of Dhaka, Bangladesh and Professor Debotpal Goswami, Retired Professor of Dakshin Kamrup College, Guwahati and currently a professor in Mahapursh Srimanta Shankardev Viswavidalaya (MSSV), Nagaon have been honoured with mementos. Followed by this, Dr. A. S. Yarso, Convenor of the international seminar briefed about the theme of the seminar. Vice Chancellor Professor Rajive Mohan Pant delivered his presidential address and all the dignitaries also shared their words of wisdom with the august gathering. The inaugural ceremony came to an end with the vote of thanks being delivered by Dr. Soma Roy Dey Choudhury, Joint Convener of the international seminar and the singing of the National Anthem.


The much awaited keynote speech of the event was presented by Prof Muhammed Shariat Ullah, University of Dhaka. In his keynote address, the professor shared some important insights on trade within and trade flows from the South and South-East Asia, the region which seeks global attention. He also threw light on various opportunities and challenges of trade and the strategic decisions to overcome these challenges in this region. Thereafter, the plenary session-I was held in the Department of Commerce.
The seminar was divided into three technical sessions for the first day. The first session was chaired by Professor Debotpal Goswami, MSSV, Nagaon and co-chaired by Dr. Ashim Kumar Das, Department of Management Studies, NIT Silchar where 10 papers were presented by the delegates in this session. The second session was chaired by Professor Alok Sen, Dean M G School of Economics and Commerce and co-chaired by Dr. Albin Joseph, Department of Social Work, Assam University and the third session was chaired by Prof Ramananda Singh Department of Business Administration, Assam University and Dr. Ritwik Mazumdar, Head, Department of Economics. In the second and third sessions, 11 to 12 deliberations were there on different topics covering the seminar theme.

The second day of the International seminar has in line three more technical sessions and two plenary sessions. The seminar shall conclude with a valedictory session wherein certificates will be distributed to all the participants. In the evening, the department shall also host a cultural programme for the guests, delegates and all other members of the seminar.
