Inner Wheel Club of Silchar observes World Environment Day by planting saplings at Rongpur
June 5: World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June and is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment. The pandemic that the world has been dealing with for almost 1.5 years now has shown how disastrous the consequences of ecosystem loss can be. By shrinking the area of natural habitat for animals, we have created ideal conditions for pathogens. The fact remains that only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the collapse of biodiversity. The theme for World Environment Day 2021 is ‘Ecosystem Restoration’. It is in this backdrop that Inner Wheel Club of Silchar observed this day with full vigour.
In keeping with its tradition and observing Covid-19 protocol, the members of Inner Wheel Club (IWC), Silchar involved themselves in plantation programme. Early morning on 5 June, the members of IWC Silchar went out and planted saplings of ornamental trees along the divider at Rongpur, Silchar. The area along the divider at Rongpur is also the space where a permanent project of plantation is carried on by IWC, Silchar.
Present during the plantation drive were President of Inner Wheel Club, Silchar Sutapa Bhattacharjee, Incoming President & Vice President Shilpi Ghosh & Moumita Gupta respectively, Incoming Secretary & Treasurer Minu Choudhury & Indrani Bhattacharjee respectively and member Sampa Banik.
