India slams twitter, says ‘attempt to dictate its term to the world’s largest democracy’

May 27: In its first official statement after the Delhi Police visited the company’s offices in Delhi and in Gurugram to serve notice to its country managing director about an investigation into the ‘manipulated media’ tag, Twitter said it will continue to be strictly guided by principles of transparency and protecting freedom of expression. Twitter further stated that it was concerned about its employees and the potential threat to freedom of expression.

Soon after, the government said: “Twitter needs to stop beating around the bush and comply with the laws of the land. Law making and policy formulations is the sole prerogative of the sovereign and Twitter is just a social media platform and it has no locus in dictating what India’s legal policy framework should be.”

Twitter’s statement is an attempt to dictate its terms to the world’s largest democracy. Through its actions and deliberate defiance, Twitter seeks to undermine India’s legal system, said the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in a press release on Thursday.

The Delhi Police have issued a sharp rebuttal to the statements released by Twitter regarding the Congress toolkit case and its aftermath. Slamming the actions of the social media behemoth heavily, the Delhi Police have stated that Twitter’s statements doing rounds in media are not just mendacious but they are actively trying to impede a lawful inquiry.

The Delhi Police have issued a sharp rebuttal to the statements released by Twitter and said that Twitter India’s latest statements are devised to seek dubious sympathy when they themselves not only refuse to comply with the law of the land but also claim to possess material evidence in an ongoing police investigation but refuse to share it with the competent legal authorities.

Twitter had earliest refused to oblige the new digital rules introduced by the Union government in the month of February. In the new digital rules, social media companies like Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter have been asked to identify within 36 hours the origin of a flagged message as well as conduct additional due diligence, including the appointment of a chief compliance officer, nodal contact person and resident grievance officer.
