Iconic World War 2 image recreated by Taliban militants in military uniform to ‘mock US’
Aug. 22: After capturing Kabul on 15 August, Taliban seems to exhibit desperate moves against the powerful nations of the world and especially against the USA. Taliban elite fighting unit Badri 313 Battalion has now recreated an iconic World War II image while wearing US military uniforms left behind by troops that left Afghanistan. The famous World War II 1945 photo of US Marines raising the flag on the island of Iwo Jimawas what the hardline Islamist group sought to copy. The recreated image shows militants raising the Taliban flag.
Unlike typical Taliban fighters, the Badri 313 Battalion is equipped with highly sophisticated equipment, such as armored Humvees, combat boots, body armor, camouflage clothing, and weapons such as M4 carbines, mirroring the gear employed by those fighting during World War II. The special forces unit’s name is derived from the Battle of Badr, an ancient battle led by Muhammad, who commanded an army of roughly 313 warriors.
The group has also released propaganda videos their fighters wearing stolen US-made military gear, including assault rifles and sophisticated tactical radio.
