June 7: Three friends from Silchar who now resides in three different parts of the country were deeply moved when they came to know from the news portals about the plight of the sex workers residing in the red light area here. They discussed the issue over telephone among themselves and thought of lending a helping hand to the female lot of the red light area of Silchar. Their condition became worst during the Covid curfew imposed to curb the spread of the deadly virus. Though interested to help, but they were not able to find out ways to reach them.
Meanwhile, one of them, Debomita Dhar came down to Silchar and through social media came in contact with Dilu Das of Netaji Chatra Yuba Sangstha (NCYS), Silchar. She saw in Facebook, how the members of NCYS were standing besides the poor and needy during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Immediately, she got in touch with Dilu Das and expressed her desire of helping the women residing in the red light area. All necessary arrangements were made. The three friends Debomita Dhar, Meghadeepa Chakraborty and Sharbari Chowdhury Gohain contributed towards purchasing essential items which they intended to donate.
On Sunday, Debomita Dhar accompanied by Dilu Das, Bappi Acahrjee, Nani Gopal Deb, Dipankar Das and others of NCYS went to the red light area of Silchar and handed over these kits to 100 sex workers. The kits comprised of soyabean, N 95 masks, hand sanitiser, soap, mustard oil, biscuit, salt and sanitary napkins.
The life of these sex workers in the brothel of Silchar has indeed become very miserable in the wake of the ongoing Covid curfew induced by the outbreak of the pandemic. Recently, on the basis of a PIL, Gauhati High Court directed the Cachar District Administration to provide ration to the sex workers of Silchar brothel. Many other organisations also came forward with relief materials. On Saturday, a female from the brothel being tortured in the absence of income fled away. She was later on rescued by an NGO and with the help of Cachar Police sent her to her home.
