HPC: Suicide Note of Biswajit Mazumder found, holds Govt. of India responsible for his death

May 2: The suicide note of Biswajit Mazumder, an employee of Nagaon Paper Mill who committed suicide on 29 April is recovered by the police. 55-year-old official Biswajit Mazumder of the distribution branch of Nagaon Paper Mill situated at Jagiroad committed suicide after allegedly being deprived of the monthly salaries for 28 months.

The suicide note of Biswajit Mazumder was recovered from Room No 6 at the Senior Hostel of Nagaon Paper Mill, by the police from inside the room where he committed suicide. It seems that he wrote the note with a sketch-pen on the door of a refrigerator. He wrote: “I Quit. GOI is responsible for my death.”

It needs mention here that Police recovered the partly decomposed body of the employee hanging from the ceiling on Monday from room no 6 of the Senior Hostel. The incident came to light when his colleague did not find him over the phone despite repeated calls. Later, police sent the body of the deceased to the Morigaon Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.

His colleagues said he was keeping tense for the past few days as he did not get salary for the past 28 months. Employees of the mill have staged several rounds of protests so far demanding their salaries. All the employees of Nagaon and Cachar Paper Mills, two units of state-owned Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL) have not been getting their salaries for more than two years. While production at Cachar Paper Mill, Panchgram stopped on 20 October, 2015, the Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad was closed on 13 March, 2017.

Speaking to way2barak, Manabendra Chakraborty Chief Convenor of HPC Paper Mills Revival Action Committee said that the death toll of the paper mill employees have now reached to 55.Commenting on the suicide note of Biswajit Mazumder, he said, “The suicide note clearly implies that it is not an ordinary death. The Government of this country has compelled Biswajit to end his life. Many more like him are awaiting death. Will the government wake up from its sleep?”
