HPC employees debarred from reaching Modi’s ‘durbar’, detained at Lakhipur

৪ জানুয়ারি : পুলিশের হুঁশিয়ারি, বিজেপির আপত্তির পরও শুক্রবার কাগজ কল খোলার দাবিতে জড়ো হয়েছেন এইচপিসি পেপার মিল রিভাইভ্যাল অ্যাকশন কমিটির কর্মকর্তারা। প্রধানমন্ত্রী নরেন্দ্র মোদির কাছে গিয়ে নিজেদের অভিযোগ ও জীবন যুদ্ধের কথা জানাতে পারলেন না কাগজ কল কর্মীরা। তার আগেই তাদের গাড়ি করে মোদির জনসভার স্থান থেকে অনেক দূরে নিয়ে গেল জেলা প্রশাসন।

কাগজ কল কর্মীদের এই আন্দোলনকে কেন্দ্র করে কোনও অবস্থায় যাতে অপ্রীতিকর পরিস্থিতির সৃষ্টি না হয়, সে কথা ভেবে তাদের শহর থেকেই সরিয়ে দেওয়া হয়।

শুক্রবার প্রধানমন্ত্রীর সফরের দিনই এই আন্দোলন কর্মসূচির কথা ঘোষনা করেছিল এইচ পি সি পেপার মিল অ্যাকশন কমিটি। কিন্তু কোন জায়গায় বিক্ষোভ হবে সে ব্যাপারে কিছুই জানায়নি। শেষমেশ শিলচর রেল স্টেশনের সামনেই প্রথমে তারা ধর্নায় বসেন। প্রতিবাদ কর্মসূচি পালনের পর তারা মিছিল করে রামনগরে সভাস্থলে যেতে চান। তখনই তাদের আটকে দেয় প্রশাসন।

ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট দীপময় হাজরিকার নির্দেশে পুলিশ আন্দোলনকারীদের গতি রোধ করে। তারা বার বার অনুরোধ করার পরও পুলিশ সভাস্থলে যেতে দেয়নি। মোট ৭৮ জনকে এ দিন গ্রেফতার করে পুলিশ। তাঁদের মধ্যে রয়েছেন মানবেন্দ্র চক্রবর্তী, দীপকচন্দ্র নাথ, সঞ্জীব রায়, আজিরউদ্দিন, রফিক আহমেদ প্রমুখ।

আন্দোলনকারীদের অন্যতম মানবেন্দ্র চক্রবর্তী বলেন, তাদের একটি বাসে উঠিয়ে অজানা স্থানে নিয়ে যায় প্রশাসন। জিগ্যেস করলেও কেউ জবাব দেননি। পরে তাদের লক্ষীপুর থানায় নিয়ে আটকে রাখা হয়। তবে সন্ধ্যের দিকে মোদির জনসভা শেষ হওয়ার পর তাদের পুনরায় শিলচরে এনে ছেড়ে দেওয়া হয়। মানবেন্দ্রবাবু অভিযোগ করেন, তাঁদের সঙ্গে প্রশাসন বড় অমানবিক আচরণ করেছে। একে তো দীর্ঘ পথ পেরিয়ে নিয়ে লক্ষ্মীপুরে রাখা হয়েছে। দ্বিতীয়ত, সারা দুপুর আটকে রাখলেও খাবারের ব্যবস্থা করা হয়নি। তাঁদের কাছে বেশি আক্ষেেপের, মোদি একটিবারের জন্য এ বার কাগজ কলের কথা উল্লেখ করেননি। তবে কি এতদিনের প্রতিশ্রুতি ভুয়োই ছিল, প্রশ্ন করেন রিভাইভ্যাল অ্যাকশন কমিটির কর্মকর্তারা।

January 4: Nero fiddles while Rome burns. This is exactly how the employees of the Paper Mill expressed their miserable plight in the backdrop of the celebration carried on at Ramnagar, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was ‘boasting off’ his government’s performance during the last 5 years before a vast multitude. The employees and the dependents of the Hindustan Paper Mills were passing their days from hand to mouth being devoid of their salary since the last 24 months. Even many of them were unable to provide education to their children due to financial constraints.

The HPC Paper Mills Revival Action Committee thought to approach the Prime Minister and narrate to him about their struggle for existence. But alas, their hopes were nipped in the bud. Before they could set out together for Ramnagar, they were forcibly taken away by the district administration in a vehicle far away from the spot where the Prime Minister was addressing the gathering.

The administration was not in a mood to take any risk of any protest demonstration at the meeting site of Modi at Ramnagar on Friday. They appeared to be extra cautious to keep the paper mill employees at a distance from Ramnagar. A total of 78 of them were detained by the police. Those detained included Manabendra Chakraborty, Dipak Chandra Nath, Sanjib Roy, Ajiruddin, Rafiq Ahmed and others.

The HPC Paper Mills Revival Action Committee had notified a few days ago that they would be holding a protest demonstration on the day when PM Modi would come to address a mass meeting at Ramnagar (around 4 kms away from Silchar). However, the Action Committee did not name the place where they would be carrying on this protest demonstration. Finally, they sat for dharna in front of the Silchar Railway Station at Tarapur. After the protest demonstration at the Railway Station, they wanted to proceed towards the meeting venue at Ramnagar. However, it was then that the administration took them away forcibly in two buses and proceeded towards Lakhipur.

All requests by the employees to allow them to go to Ramnagar fall flat on the ears of the police personnel. Police forces forbid them to proceed towards the meeting venue of PM Modi at the direction of Magistrate Dipamoy Hazarika. Manabendra Chakraborty, Convenor of the HPC Paper Mills Revival Action Committee said that they were taken to some unknown location. Though they asked but none from the administration gave them any reply as to where they were being taken. Later on they were detained at Lakhipur police station. However, towards evening, they were brought back to Silchar and were set free. But by that time all hopes of meeting the Prime Minister and seeking his intervention in the revival of the paper mill remained unfulfilled.

Manabendra Chakraborty lamented that though they were detained for the whole day but they were not provided any food. He was highly critical of the inhuman attitude of the administration. The employees were heard to say that all promises made since the last two years from the Prime Minister to all other politicians and bureaucrats were indeed ‘promises made to be broken.’
