High level meeting held between Assam & Mizoram at Aizawl to resolve border dispute

Aug. 9: A ministerial level meeting was convened in Aizawl between Assam and Mizoram on Tuesday to discuss the inter-state border issues. Assam was represented in the said meeting by two of its cabinet ministers, Atul bora and Ashok Singhal; whereas, Mizoram was represented by its Home Minister Lalchamliana and Minister of Public Information Lalruatkime. Commissioner (Border) GD Tripathi also took part in this high level meeting. The meeting which took place at Aizawl Club lasted for more than an hour.

This is the 2nd high level meeting between the two states on the issue of border dispute. It needs mention here that the 1st meeting between the two states on the issue of border dispute took place on 5 August, 2021. Though almost a year have elapsed, but yet the border issue between Assam and Mizoram has not yet been resolved. The areas of Assam which were occupied by Mizoram was not yet recovered by Assam.

After the meeting on Tuesday. a Joint Statement was signed between the States of Mizoram and Assam on 9 August, 2022 at Aizawl, Mizoram to take forward the process of resolution of boundary dispute between the two States:

1. Both the States reaffirm the Joint Statement of 5th August, 2021 in letter and spirit.
2. Both the States agreed to promote and maintain peace and to prevent any untoward incident along the borders, the Deputy Commissioners of the bordering districts of both States shall meet at least once in two months.


3. Both the States agreed that economic activities including cultivation and farming which have been practised by the people along the borders of the two States shall not be disturbed but allowed to continue regardless of the administrative control presently exercised by either State at such locations subject to Forest Regulations and after informing the Deputy Commissioners concerned.
4. Next meeting between the High Level delegations of the two States shall take place at Guwahati during October, 2022, where issues and claims will be deliberated in details.
