Heavy shower leads to landslide in Sonapur, road connectivity disrupted

২৪ মে : বর্ষার মরশুম শুরু হতেই ফের মেঘালয়ের সোনাপুরের ধসপ্রবণ এলাকায় পাহাড় থেকে পাথর, কাদামাটি নেমে এসেছে। আর এতে বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে পড়েছে বরাক উপত্যকা সহ পার্শ্ববর্তী রাজ্য ত্রিপুরা, মিজোরাম ও মণিপুরের কিছু অংশ।

প্রত্যক্ষদর্শীরা জানান, শুক্রবার সকালে সোনাপুর এলাকায় ৬ নম্বর জাতীয় সড়কের উপর পাহাড় থেকে ধস নামে। খবর পেয়ে মেঘালয় পূর্ত বিভাগের আধিকারিকরা ঘটনাস্থলে ছুটে যান। মাটি সরানোর কাজে লাগানো হয় শ্রমিকদের। যুদ্ধকালীন তৎপরতায় ধস সরানোর কাজ শুরু হলেও সন্ধ্যে পর্যন্ত জাতীয় সড়ক ধসমুক্ত হয়নি। একটি সূত্রে বলা হয়েছে, রাতে ধস ধরিয়ে সড়কে যানবাহন চলাচল শুরু হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে।

অন্যদিকে সকাল থেকে সোনাপুরে ধস পড়ার ফলে দূরপাল্লার বহু যাত্রীবাহী গাড়ি আটকে রয়েছে। সড়কের দু’ধারে আটকে পড়া যাত্রীরা দিনভর দুর্ভোগের মুখে পড়েছেন।

May 24: With the onset of the rainy season, the hilly tracts of Northeast region have become prone to landslides. As a result of frequent spells of rain, a massive landslide occurred at Sonapur in Meghalaya on Friday afternoon. As the spot of landslide falls in Silchar-Guwahati highway, so road connectivity between these two places got disrupted.

The concerned department of the Meghalaya government immediately set to the task of clearing the road. Excavators were called in to remove the debris. However, the work of clearing the road got interrupted time and again due to incessant rains. Frequent showers led to more debris sliding down from the hills.

Meanwhile, the blockade of road led to a long queue of vehicles on either side of the spot of the landslide. PWD officials were hopeful of getting the road cleared as early as possible.
