Amidst cries of blood soaked patients, a doctors appeal win thousands of heart

October 30: A speeding truck ran over several people in a Kali Puja immersion procession in Meherpur area of Silchar. Two young girls were crushed to death and 19 others were injured on Wednesday night. Out of the 19 injured, the condition of two of them were reported to be serious. All are at present admitted at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).

The truck which went on rampage was burnt to ashes by the angry mob. But very soon rumours took the upper hand and untrue incidents were communicated in social media platforms. An on-duty doctor at SMCH too might have noticed such rumours in social media and took to Facebook to convey a beautiful message. At around 11 PM on 30 October, a junior doctor, Dawipayan Deb working in SMCH wrote in his Facebook page, “I am updating this so that people stay safe and do not give ear to rumours. Yes, a Road Traffic Accident has happened and the injured will need urgent blood now. To all those who are reading this, come and donate blood for the injured at SMCH. This is the best way you can help them now. Stay safe.”

Till around late in the night, this wonderful message was shared by 64 Facebook users. His message was even shared by many blood donors group in WhatsApp, where they too appealed to all their donors to stay ready for blood donation for the 19 victims of the accident, if required.

Dr. Dawipayan Deb was on duty during the night. He was very touched by the blood soaked victims who were brought to SMCH one after another. He took to His Facebook page once again at around midnight and wrote another wonderful message which touched the hearts of thousands of social media users. People even took screenshots of his message and circulated it in various social media platforms.

Dr. Dawipayan Deb wrote, “As an on-duty doctor, I have the first hand experience and have seen how the injured were rushed in today. There was blood, cries and grief everywhere. I have never experienced such a situation in my life before. Young patients coming in with their bodies drenched in blood. As a doctor, I kept aside my emotions and started treating each and every patient like a family but, it moved my heart as well. Within minutes my fellow colleagues rushed to the spot leaving aside their other jobs. From the top of the hospital administration to the interns, all rushed in to help the injured. My empathy to the people who have lost their loved ones. The injured are being taken care of by the best medical team. I request the people of this town to line up tomorrow and donate blood for the injured, because these are the circumstances when we should all unite to save lives. Stay safe, pray for the injured and please don’t resort to any kind of violence.”

Within a span of two hours of writing this message, it was shared by more than 150 persons. Such a sense of devotion towards duty and that too by a young doctor won the hearts of a multitude of social media users. Renowned dancer Saumitra Shankar Choudhury who recently lost his nephew Sayantan Chakraborty due to lack of proper treatment facilities at SMCH wrote a heart touching comment beneath the post of Dr. Dawipayan Deb. Saumitra Shankar Choudhury wrote, “We are proud of you Dawipayan. Your friends are also our pride. You people are our future. We have faith and dependence on you and your colleagues.”

Dr. Dawipayan Deb is at present perusing Internship at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). He was also the Former General Secretary of SMCH Students’ Union in the year 2018-19. Among his passions, playing flute seems to be the prime one. Praises were indeed heaped upon him in social media for his commendable service along with his colleagues.
