Genuine Indian citizens excluded from NRC need not worry: Sarbananda Sonowal
May 20: As per the direction of the Supreme Court, the final updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be published on 31 July, 2019. This has created a panic among those whose names were not included in the NRC. However, before publication of the final list, the NRC authorities will publish an additional draft list on 15 June, 2019.
Meanwhile panic gripped the people of the state over “indiscriminate and fake” notices being served by the NRC authorities. Realising the mounting tension among the people, social organisations and political parties in this regard, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said to newsmen in Delhi that “genuine Indian citizens whose names are not included in this NRC draft do not need to panic.” He added that “No genuine citizens will be left out from the final NRC draft, which will be published on 15 June, 2019.
The Chief Minister addressed the media on the sideline of a meeting held by Ministry of Home Affairs, which was chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi. The said meeting was also attended by Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia, Assam Chief Secretary Alok Kumar, NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela and some other top officials of the state.
