Gandhi Jayanti observed in Hailakandi with varied programmes

Oct.2: “Discipline is the greatest trait of Mahatma Gandhi and this he followed religiously in all walks of life,” said Deputy Commissioner, Megh Nidhi Dahal during the closing ceremony of two-year long birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi at Rabindra Bhawan here on Friday. Deputy Commissioner Dahal said Gandhiji’s life is all about discipline and that he followed discipline assiduously and relentlessly come what may.
Dahal said Gandhiji’s tolerance, forbearance, discipline and ahimsa were all encompassing virtues that made him the Mahatma and left an indelible imprint on the sands of time and minds of great personalities.

Speaking on the head and heart qualities of Gandhiji, Dahal said he stuck to his ideologies and principles and he stood like a solid rock against all odds to embark on his avowed mission to free the country from the yoke of slavery. “The air of freedom we breathe today is due to the supreme sacrifices of Gandhiji and we must remember this radiant personality not only on Gandhi Jayanti day but everyday and follow in his footsteps to forge ahead in life,” he quipped.

Dahal said Gandhiji was an institution by himself and his teachings are all encompassing and relevant for all times to come. The Deputy Commissioner said whenever in doubt as to what is right or wrong or what to give precedence over others, the best thing is to apply Gandhiji’s talisman vis-a-vis truth and truth alone as it (truth) will ultimately prevail at the end. Dahal said discipline has to be maintained in terms of adhering to the COVID-19 protocols such as wearing masks and maintaining social distancing to keep the disease at bay.

Speaking on the occasion, Additional Deputy Commissioner, RK Dam said Gandhiji’s ideals must be followed to stand in good stead in life. Noted journalist, Satananda Bhattacharjee said Gandhiji’s philosophy of ‘simple living, high thinking’ must be imbibed by the young generation to make a mark in life.

Earlier, in his welcome address, DIPRO, Sabir Nishat said a series of programmes were organised by the district administration and DIPRO to mark the closing ceremony of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. “A webinar on relevance of Gandhianism in modern times, online quiz and portrait competitions together with a virtual exhibition on the life of the Mahatma with focus on his role in the freedom movement were organised to mark the momentous occasion,” he added.

Deputy Commissioner, Dahal inaugurated a documentary – Relentless battle against COVID-19 continues – produced by Golden Ratio in association with DIPRO, Hailakandi.

In the morning, Deputy Commissioner, Dahal led the district in paying floral tribute at the life size statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Ghat. Tricycles for collecting dry and wet waste were ceremonially distributed to NGOs and ALFs by the Deputy Commissioner in the presence of Additional Deputy Commissioner cum Executive Officer, Hailakandi Municipal Board, Deepmala Goala, DSP, Nayanmoni Barman and other officials.
In another programme held at GNM Training School, Deputy Commissioner Dahal, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Health, Narendra Kumar Shah, Joint Director, Health Services, Dr. Ashutosh Barman, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CD) Dr. Ramesh Chandra Dwivedy felicitated 57 Swachhata Sevak (cleaning staff) engaged in COVID duty in different COVID Care Centres and COVID hospitals.

Deputy Commissioner, Dahal and officials of the district administration and Health department praised lavishly Swachhata Sevak for rendering yeoman services during the COVID-19 pandemic by putting their own lives at peril. In-charges of BPHCs, Nodal Officers of CCCs and COVID hospitals, DPMU and BPMU were present.
