কোফি আন্নান প্রয়াত, বিশ্ব শোকস্তব্ধFormer UN Secretary General Kofi Annan dies at the age of 80
রাষ্ট্রসংঘের প্রাক্তন মহাসচিব, নোবেলজয়ী কোফি আন্নান ৮০ বছর বয়সে আজ প্রয়াত হয়েছেন। ১৯৯৭ থেকে ২০০৬ সাল পর্যন্ত তিনি দুইবার ওই পদে মনোনীত হয়েছিলেন। রাষ্ট্রসংঘের পদ-দায়িত্ব শেষ হলে জেনেভা থেকে তিনি চলে গিয়েছিলেন সুইজারল্যান্ডের গ্রামে। সেখানেই শনিবার সকালে তিনি মৃত্যুর কোলে ঢলে পড়েন। স্ত্রী ও তিন কন্যা তখন পাশেই ছিলেন। রাষ্ট্রসংঘের বর্তমান মহাসচিব অ্যান্তেনিও গুটেরেস বলেন, অনেক সময় কোফি আন্নানকেই মনে হয় রাষ্ট্রসংঘ। ব্রিটেনের প্রধানমন্ত্রী থেরেসা মে তাঁকে ইউএন রিফর্মার বলে অভিহিত করেন।
কোফি আন্নান ১৯৬২ সালে রাষ্ট্রসংঘের প্রশাসনে যুক্ত হন। শুরুতে ছিলেন অ্যাডমিনিস্ট্রেটিভ অফিসার। মহাসচিবের দায়িত্ব পালনের আগে কিছুদিন কাজ করেন আন্ডার সেক্রেটারি জেনারেল। ছিলেন স্পেশাল রিপ্রেজেন্টিটিভও।
Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary general, has died at the age of 80. He served two terms as the head of the UN, with which he shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. His foundation announced his death in Switzerland on Saturday in a tweet, saying that he died after a short unspecified illness.
His aristocratic style, cool-tempered elegance and political savvy helped guide his ascent to become its seventh secretary-general, and the first hired from within. He had been a member of The Elders, a group of global leaders working for human rights, since it was founded in 2007. In 2013, he became its chairman.
During his tenure, Annan presided over some of the worst failures and scandals at the world body, one of its most turbulent periods since its founding in 1945. Challenges from the outset forced him to spend much of his time struggling to restore its tarnished reputation.
World leaders have reacted to the death of former UN secretary-general, Kofi Annan who died at the age of 80 in the early hours of Saturday, August 18, in Switzerland. The leaders include British Prime Minister Theresa May, France Prime Minister Emmnauel Macron and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres among other. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi too expressed profound sorrow at the death of Kofi Annan.
