Former CM Tarun Gogoi’s ashes immersed in Barak by his son Gaurav Gogoi
Jan. 6: The ashes of former three-time Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi was immersed at Sadarghat in river Barak, Silchar by his son, Gaurav Gogoi. The junior Gogoi, who is the Kaliabar Lok Sabha MP, was accompanied by former Silchar MP & President of All India Mahila Congress Sushmita Dev, Silchar District Congress President, MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and a galaxy of Congress party leaders.
The urn containing the ashes of the departed Congress veteran was wrapped in a traditional Assamese gamosha. The ashes were immersed in the river by Gaurav Gogoi amidst chanting of religious hymns by a group of singers and a retinue of Congress workers and supporters raising their voices shouting slogans “Long Live Tarun Gogoi.”
Prior to this, early during the day, after the arrival of Gaurav Gogoi, a peace meeting was held at Silchar Congress office where hymns from Bhagbad Gita was also recited. The pot containing the ashes was taken in an open truck decked up with flowers and a large portrait of Tarun Gogoi placed in the vehicle. Congress party workers of all levels participated in the procession from the party office to Sadarghat, where the ashes were later on immersed in river Barak.
