Former Australian cricketer Dean Jones dies of heart attack in Mumbai
Sept. 24: In an unfortunate turn of events, former Australia cricketer Dean Jones passed away in Mumbai on Thursday following a cardiac arrest, at the age of 59. Indian TV network Star Sports announced Jones’s death in a statement which read, “It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Mr Dean Mervyn Jones AM. We are in touch with the Australian High Commission to make the necessary arrangements. Dean Jones was one of the great ambassadors of the game.”
Jones was in Mumbai as a commentator for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. It is understood that Brett Lee, his fellow commentator, tried to give him CPR but unsuccessfully. On Thursday morning Jones had breakfast with Lee and another commentator, Nikhil Chopra. Jones suffered a a massive heart attack in the lobby of the hotel where he was staying during the commentary stint.
A batsman during his playing days, he played 52 Tests and scored 3631 runs including 11 centuries, and featured in 164 One-Day matches, racking up 6063 runs, seven centuries and 46 fifties. Jones made his debut for Australia in a Test match in the West Indies in 1984.
