Flood Relief Distributed by University Teachers
way2barak, June 8: Assam University Teachers’ Association (AUTA) organized a relief campaign for the flood-affected people. Many of the affected had taken shelter at the Ambedkar Bhavan in the Dak Bungalow area around the University. Relief was distributed amongst 20 families there. Subsequently, relief was also distributed to another 20 families at Dargakona, which is also located near the university. Later, relief was distributed to 75 households who were sheltered at the Chhotalal Seth Institute located at Shillong Patty, Silchar city. Additionally, it was distributed to five more families on Ashram Road. Altogether, relief was provided to approximately 120 families that day. The relief packages contained essentials like rice, pulses, salt, sugar, soybean, milk, biscuits, flattened rice, and soap.
This was an initiative spearheaded by the AUTA new executive committee, which was formed on May 15, 2024. Dr. Devashish Sengupta was elected as President, Prof. Mostafizur Rahman as Vice-President, Dr. Somaditya Dutta as General Secretary, while Dr. Barunjyoti Choudhury and Dr Moses Kharbithai were appointed as Joint Secretaries. Dr Kalyan Chandra Das was elected as the Treasurer.
According to AUTA leaders, “Driven by the good wishes of all the members of AUTA and the strong sense of social responsibility this body has, the relief campaign was possible despite all odds and an extremely turbulent weather on that day.”
