FIR lodged after JEE topper from Assam allegedly used proxy candidate to score 99.8%
Oct. 28: A big scam centering JEE 2020 came to surface in Assam. An FIR has been registered against a candidate of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains allegedly for using a proxy to sit in the examination. The examination was held on September 5. According to the FIR lodged by Mitradev Sharma at the Azara police station in Guwahati, the candidate, who scored 99.8%, allegedly didn’t appear for the test held on September 5.
In fact, the FIR alleged that the candidate had to appear for the JEE examination at a center in Borjhar in Guwahati. But after completing the biometric attendance formalities, he came out of the examination hall with the help of the invigilator and someone else gave that candidate the exam. The complainant has alleged that the parents of the candidate, both of whom are practicing doctors, had paid a sum of Rs 15-20 lakhs to a private coaching institute in Guwahati to help the candidate in the crime.
Guwahati, DCP (West) Suprottiv Lal Barua while speaking to a national daily said that a special investigation team has been formed to investigate these allegations. The candidate is presently outside the state and the police are yet to call him for questioning. Police is in touch with the National Testing Agency in this case, which conducts JEE examinations across the country. A a case 624/2020 u/s 120/419/420/406 IPC, r/w sections 66 (B) of IT Act has been registered in this regard and the further investigation is on.
Update: A total of five persons, including a Guwahati-based specialist doctor, have been arrested by Assam Police in connection with a case related to the use of a proxy candidate in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains 2020. The four other arrested persons have been identified as Neel Nakshatra Das, son of Dr Jyotirmoy Das; Hamendra Nath Sarma, Pranjal Kalita and Hirukamal Pathak.
