Existing dyke at Mahisha Beel not in a position to sustain vibration of pumps: Dist Administration

July 11: The Mahisha Beel which is still full of water after the recent devastating flood has become a serious concern. The concerned line departments planned to pump out the accumulated water out of the Mahisha Beel. However, on 11 July, District Administration Cachar through its official Facebook Page informed that pumps could not be installed as the existing Bethukandi dyke is not in a position to sustain the vibration.

District Administration Cachar wrote, “We have tried to install pumps to pump out the water out of Mahisha Bheel to Barak 4 days ago. It was seen that existing Dyke is not in a position to sustain the vibration of the pump and hence the pumps couldn’t be installed successfully.”

It needs mention here that the dyke at Bethukandi was breached resulting in flooding of Mahisha Beel during the last part of June. In this connection, police has also arrested 4 persons.

Since then, netizens have severely resented to this statement and voiced their grievance on this post. “Kindly change the location again try to install pumps and solve this issue,” wrote Iqbal Mazumder. Another netizen, Rafye Mazumder wrote, “I think a particular portion of dyke is weak for about 100-200 metres but total area is about 1Km , it can be installed in some other places leaving the weak areas.” Another Mashurul Bari suggested, “Why not you try to place the pump in different location? Put the pump in other location. You may also use a long suction pipe in that case.”

Commenting on this post, one Parwayz Alam Barbhuiya wrote, “If administration can’t install pumps for dewatering, it’s quite unbelievable. Its reflects their casual approach or negligence towards the mass sufferers at Mahisha beel. Moreover we haven’t seen any photography or videography of the efforts to install pumps. We are habituated to see photos of mere activities of administration but for such a major task on which fate of thousands are lying no one has seen or no evidence of activities being seen. So people are doubtful…. Requesting administration to take expert help to install pumps, if there is a will, there is a way. Also requesting administration to upload photos or videos during the installation attempts, people will get confidence on seeing such or they will be doubtful. Please help the people living like hell, they are too humans….”
