গৌহাটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে বিজেপি নেতাদের প্রবেশে নিষেধাজ্ঞাEntry of BJP leaders banned in Gauhati University
January 14: A major decision was taken by the students body of Gauhati University in the backdrop of the controversy created due to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The students’ body of the Gauhati University (GU) has taken a very stringent method of protest against the Bill. They have decided to restrict entry of the BJP legislators and members inside their campus of GU until the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is withdrawn.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 was passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8 and stalled by the Rajya Sabha on January 9. The Citizenship Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2016 to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Bill amends the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.
Meanwhile on 11 January, Assam University, Silchar has put a ban on the holding of any procession or dharna in the periphery of its campus. This step was taken in the backdrop of protest lauched in the campus last week both in support and against the Bill.
