April 19: Arrested Senior Assistant of Cachar District Election Office Atasi Dutta Tarafdar who was caught red-handed by a team of Vigilance Officers from the anti-corruption wing of Assam Police while taking bribe inside her office chamber on 28 March was taken to Guwahati on transit remand on 30 March, 2019. She was produced in the court of Kamrup Metro CJM at Guwahati the next day.
The court granted the 3-day remand petition and she was then interrogated by the sleuths of Anti-corruption wing. On 3 April, she was produced in the Kamrup Special Court of Justice Gautam Barua. As per the direction of the court, Atasi was sent to jail on 14-day judicial remand.
On 17 April, 2019, Atasi Dutta Tarafdar was again produced before a special court at Kamrup. The court once again sent her to 14-day judicial remand. As per Jiten Chakraborty, DSP of Anti-Corruption Department, Atasi will be produced again in the court on 1 May, 2019.
Atasi Dutta Tarafdar demanded a bribe of Rs. 95,000 for releasing a bill of Rs. 2.5 lakh of a printing press. Unable to convince Atasi Dutta Tarafdar, the owner of the printing press Sujit Chanda informed the Chief Minister’s Vigilance Cell. In return, the Chief Minister’s Vigilance Cell directed the anti-corruption bureau to take immediate action. On 28 March, a trap was laid and she was caught red-handed.
However, before starting for Guwahati on 30 March, the 9-member vigilance team raided her flat ‘Shanti Abasan’ at Nutanpatty, Silchar. The search operation by the vigilance team continued for about 3 to 4 hours. It was learnt that during the raid, some bank passbooks and LIC policy documents were seized by the team and were taken along with them. The vigilance team refused to divulge much facts about this raid. After completion of the search operation, the team set out for Guwahati along with Atasi.
