ECI announces Rajya Sabha elections for Assam, voting on June 19

way2barak, May 27 : Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Monday that biennial elections for two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam will be held on June 19, with results declared the same day. The election notification will be issued on June 2, and nominations can be submitted until June 9.
The elections coincide with the impending expiry of terms for Mission Ranjan Das (BJP) and Birendra Prasad Baishya (AGP) on June 14. Assam currently holds seven seats in the upper house, six of which are controlled by the NDA (BJP 4, UPPL 1, AGP 1), with one held by an Independent.
The ECI has also scheduled Rajya Sabha elections for six seats in Tamil Nadu on the same day, along with bypolls for five Assembly constituencies across four states.
To ensure voting integrity, the commission has mandated the use of violet sketch pens of predetermined specifications, provided by the returning officer, for marking ballot preferences. Alternative writing instruments are strictly prohibited.
ECI observers will be deployed to oversee the electoral process, with mandatory compliance to its Covid-19 guidelines where applicable.
