Drive against single use plastic in Hailakandi; 70 kgs of single use plastic seized
Jan.25: A joint inspection was carried out by Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), Hailakandi and Pollution Control Board, Silchar against single use plastic (below 50 microns) at various locations of Hailakandi town here on Friday. Single use plastics (below 50 microns) has been banned at Hailakandi town as per Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.
In this drive around 70 kgs of single use plastics below 50 microns, thermocol plates etc has been seized from various shops and fines realised amounting to around Rs.5000 from some shopkeepers for non compliance of Solid and Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016. The drive has been conducted in presence of Manirul Islam, City Project Officer SBM(U), Hailakandi Municipal Board, Ibrahim Laskar, CPO, N.Nath ES, PCBA, RLO, Silchar and other staff of Hailakandi Municipal Board.
It may be mentioned that the district administration had banned single-use plastic in August 2019. It also urged the traders to discard single-use plastic and help the local SHGs by endorsing their handmade products for ushering in a healthy and wealthy Hailakandi. The administration has opened a plastic bank where citizens can go and deposit single-use plastic items. “The initiative has been taken to bring about behaviour modification and to encourage an eco-friendly lifestyle,” said an official of the district administration.
