September 1: A condolence meeting was held in the memory of senior doctor Deven Dutta at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) on Sunday evening. The condolence meeting was attended by the doctors and patients of SMCH. Speaking during the condolence meeting, strong demand was raised by the doctors of SMCH to bring the culprits to book immediately who killed Dr. Dutta mercilessly at Jorhat’s Teok Tea Estate.
As per reports, on Saturday evening, locals of Teok Tea Estate in Jorhat, Assam brutally attacked the hospital inside the garden and the 73-year-old resident doctor Deven Dutta. As per reports, 33-year-old Sukra Majhi, a casual worker, who resided at No 12 line was taken to the hospital inside the estate, in critical condition at around12 noon on Saturday. At that time Dr. Dutta was not present in the hospital and the pharmacist was also on leave. So the nurse injected a saline after which the patient died.
Following the death of the patient the angry tea garden labourers alleged that there was no hospital staff to attend to the deceased. Sources revealed that when Dr Dutta arrived at about 3.30 pm, he was severely beaten up and locked in a room in the hospital. At about 5 pm police from Teok police station and CRPF rescued the doctor and rushed him to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), where he succumbed to his injuries.
