Prof. Abhik Gupta appointed as Pro Vice Chancellor of Assam University

January 20: Amidst the ongoing deadlock in Assam University between the Research Scholars Association and a section of the Students’ Union, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath has moved ahead in appointing his deputy in the campus.

In a notification issued by Dr. P.K. Nath, Registrar in-charge of Assam University on 20 January, 2020, it was stated that, “Subject to the ratification by the Executive Council, the Vice Chancellor is pleased to appoint Prof. Abhik Gupta, Department of Ecology and Environmental Science as Pro Vice Chancellor of Assam University, Silchar campus with immediate effect.”

In the said notification, it was further stated that, “Prof. Gupta shall discharge his duties as Pro Vice Chancellor as per the provisions of Act, Statute, Ordinance and Regulation of Assam University.”

Born and brought up in Shillong, Prof. Abhik Gupta started his career as a Lecturer in the Department of Zoology at St Edmund’s College, Shillong. From there, he joined Assam University as a Reader in Department of Ecology and Environment Science in 1996.

Prof. Gupta’s area of interest includes Ecology and Biodiversity, especially of freshwater ecosystems, environmental pollution and Ecotoxicology Environmental Monitoring and Management Environmental History, Policy and Ethics.
