June 26: In a significant development in the state education scenario, Assam government has finally decided to withdraw the higher secondary education system from the colleges across the state. 2019 is going to be the last year for higher secondary education in colleges. This was said by State Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharjee. He was speaking at the 35th foundation day of the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC), Guwahati.

The Education Minister was the chief guest at the ceremony organised by AHSEC. While addressing the gathering, Mr. Bhattacharjee expressed surprise as to how class XI and XII are taught by those colleges which have now become universities. Moreover, de-linking of HS from the colleges was also a long standing demand of the Assam College Teachers’ Association (ACTA).

Sidhhartha Bhattacharjee also informed that decision of de linking Higher Secondary from colleges was decided in a meeting which was held with the Vice Chancellors of different universities in Assam recently. He, however, did not make it clear where and how the students of the state be accommodated for pursuing higher secondary education after HSLC.
