Debate competition held among students on Parakram Divas 

way2barak, Jan 25 : Celebrating Parakram Diwas, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the Department of Political Science, Women’s College, Silchar, with support of the IQAC, organised an intra-college parliamentary-style debate on the motion “armed struggle was justified in seeking Indian Independence”. Uddipan Misra, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science was the coordinator of the competition. Dr. Avinandan Choudhury, the Head of the Department of Political Science presided over the House as the Speaker. Dr. Santanu Das, Vice Principal, Dr. Sanghamitra Debnath, Head of the Department of Philosophy, and Dr. Arindam Gupta, an eminent journalist, were the judges of the day. A range of opinions and arguments were emphatically articulated by participants across both the treasury and the opposition benches regarding the moral, political and strategic dimensions of armed struggle by some Indian nationalists vis-à-vis peaceful, nonviolent protests by others. After the dissolution of the House, Dr. Sujit Tewari, the Principal of the college and Dr. Arindam Gupta, one of the judges emphasised the need to reignite the culture of debating for which Silchar was renowned, and lauded the students for their active participation. Sania Sodiyal, Smita Das, and Yasmin Aktar Laskar won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize respectively.
