Death toll in CAA-ILP clashes in Meghalaya rises to 3

March 1: The death toll in the ongoing violence in Meghalaya against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and demand for the imposition of inner line permit (ILP) regime rose to three on Sunday. According to a bulletin issued by Meghalaya police on Sunday morning, Uphas Uddin, 37, died after he was attacked by 3 unidentified people at his house in Pyrken village in Shella of East Khasi Hills district.

Meanwhile, security arrangements have been intensified in several parts of the state as curfew was re-imposed at Lumdienjiri & Sadar areas of Shillong on Sunday. Eight companies of central armed police forces (CAPF) have already been deployed to control the prevailing law-and-order situation, said reports.

A non-tribal petty trader from Assam identified as Rupchand Dewan (29), son of Ibrahim Dewan, a resident of Muslimpara in Borbila under Barpeta district was killed in Shillong while seven others were injured as they were attacked by a group of miscreants on Saturday. Earlier, a Khasi youth, identified as 35-year-old Lurshai Hynniewta, son of late Serkin Nongkyndrih, a resident of Khliehshnong Sohra, was attacked was critically injured in the attack and died at Sohra CHC on Friday.

Meanwhile, Internet services remain suspended in six districts of Meghalaya – East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills districts since 10 pm on Friday. SMS services of all mobile service providers also remain hit, being limited to only five SMS per day.

In order to help stranded tourists reach safe destinations in the midst of the prevailing situation, Meghalaya police have launched a toll-free phone service and asked them to contact 1800-345-3846 for assistance.
