June 8: Pandemics are known to exacerbate mental health conditions among the patients. The situation becomes much more grave when Covid-19 positive patients are admitted in hospitals or Covid Care Centres where they are unable to meet their family members and are kept under strict isolation. The daily routine of such patients get abruptly halted. There is hardly any source of distraction for them as others admitted in that isolation ward are also passing through a similar mental stage. However, since the outbreak of the pandemic, it has come to the notice that several doctors and nurses have tried to boost up the spirits of the patients by singing songs or performing dance numbers inside the Covid ward.
One such incident in the district hospital of Asansol in West Bengal has won the hearts of millions as a nurse engaged in duty in the Covid ward danced in front of the patients wearing PPE kit. The video of 3.12 minutes duration has now gone viral in the social media platforms. Sharing this news clip of ABP Ananda in his Facebook wall, teacher and social activist Dipak Sengupta wrote, “The performance is not in any district of Assam. A nurse in Asansol (West Bengal) could be seen dancing to the tune of a Sylheti song.” Senior journalist Pranabananda Das too shared this video in his timeline and wrote, “Coronavirus in WB: A nurse in the Covid ward of the district hospital in Asansol has taken the social media by a storm by dancing to the tune of ‘Naya Daman’.”
Expressing her views, the nurse who has become almost a celebrity in social media by her performance said, “In the first place, the patients who gets admitted in the Covid ward usually gets mentally depressed. More than the pain of the disease, these patients become depressed primarily due to loneliness. This is mostly because they are unable to meet their family members. Many a times, they become sad seeing the more serious patient in his next bed. In such cases, the depression increases manifold. So to imbibe a sense of positivity among them, to make them feel that we are besides them and fighting the pandemic together, I performed the dance.”
