April 21: Here are the major events that occurred on 21 April….

  • 21 April, 1451: Buhlul Khan Lodi, an Afghan and founder of Lodi dynasty, ascends the throne of Delhi and displaced the Alam Shah of Syed dynasty.
  • 21 April, 1526: Mughal conqueror Babur (1483-1530) defeats Ibrahim Lodi II, the Lodi Sultan of Delhi, and captures Delhi and the Koh-i-noor diamond, in the First Battle of Panipat. He founded the Mughal dynasty in India (1526-1761), consolidated by his grandson Akbar.
  • 21 April, 1659: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj meet Saint Samarth Ramdas Swami.
  • 21 April, 1924: Maharaja Karni Singh, the last ruler of Bikaner State, was born

 

  • 21 April, 1938: Muhammad Iqbal composer of the song “Sare Jahan se Achha”, famous Urdu poet, passed away.
  • 21 April, 1946: Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, cricket (Indian off-spinner, Test umpire, ICC referee), was born in Madras. He received Arjun Award (1971).
  • 21 April, 1955: Avadi session of the Indian National Congress adopts a socialistic pattern of society for India.

 

  • 21 April, 1975:Farakka Barrage dedicated to nation. The project construction commenced in 1961 and the project was commissioned and dedicated to the Nation in 1975. The Farakka Barrage Project was designed to serve the need of preservation and maintenance of the Kolkata Port by improving the regime and navigability of the Bhagirathi-Hoogly river system.
  • 21 April, 1983: The German magazine Stern created a sensation when it announced the discovery of the Hitler Diaries, 60 volumes of journals reportedly written by Adolf Hitler; however, they were quickly determined to be forgeries.
  • 21 April, 1990: The first indigenously built missile cruiser boat, ‘Vibhuti’, was inaugurated and launched.

  • 20 April, 2000: A full bench of the Madras High Court quashes the Tamil Nadu Government order making Tamil (or mother tongue) as the compulsory medium of instruction in all schools in the State up to Standard V.
  • 20 April, 2012: Plane crash near Islamabad, Pakistan, kills 127 people.
  • 20 April, 2016: More than 170 countries signed the Paris Agreement on climate change, a landmark treaty that sought to control and reduce greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere; it took effect in November 2016.
