Counting of votes for 80 Municipal Boards in Assam to take place on 9 March

March 8: Elections to 80 Municipal Boards of Assam including Sonai and Lakhipur in Cachar; Karimganj, Badarpur & Ramkrishna Nagar in Karimganj district and Hailakandi and Lala in Hailakandi district of Barak Valley was concluded peacefully on 6 March, 2022.

As per the directives of Assam State Election Commissioner Alok Kumar, it was for the first time in the history of Assam that M2 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were used during the Municipal elections. The counting of votes will take place for these 80 Municipal Boards on 9 March, 2022. The counting will begin at 8 AM.

Polling to Lakhipur and Sonai Municipal Boards concluded hassle-free on Sunday. 75.39 percent voters exercised their franchise at 10 wards under Sonai Municipal Board, in which a total of 33 candidates contested. The polling on Sunday took place at 15 polling booths in Sonai where 52 poll personnel were drafted.  At the end of the poll, the EVMs were deposited by the polling staff at Govt Boys HS School,where these were kept securely in make-shift strong room. The votes will be counted at Govt Boys School on 9 March.

Meanwhile, 75.39 percent voters exercised their franchise at 10 wards under Lakhipur Municipal Board, in which a total of 28 candidates contested. The polling on Sunday took place at 12 polling booths. 48 poll personnel were drafted for these 12 booths. At Lakhipur too, the voting went on peaceful in the presence of adequate security. The EVMs after the polls were kept in strong room at Earle HS School at Lakhipur. Counting of votes will take place at this centre also on 9 March.
