Congress writes to Railway Minister, demands resumption of local trains in Assam
Jan. 28: With the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in India in March 2020, local train services also remained suspended in Assam. Assam leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia on Thursday Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal seeking resumption of local train services in the state. In October last year also, Saikia wrote a similar letter to the Railways Minister. But no action has been initiated in this regard by the Indian Railways even though three months have elapsed since the appeal.
In the fresh letter, Assam leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia wrote, “Sir, as I had mentioned earlier, regular train commuters are facing immense hardship due to the lengthy stoppage of local train services. The worst affected persons are petty traders and vendors who travel by train to sell their wares in urban areas on a daily basis, as also employees who travel daily to their workplaces in urban areas and return home in the evening.”
“Operation of normal train services is a dire necessity for such people when it comes to their daily livelihood. As such, I request you kindly issue necessary orders for resumption of local train services in Assam as early as possible. I will be highly grateful for prompt action on your part,” added the Assam leader of the Opposition in his letter.
