Students of G.C. College raised demand of terminating the teacher
February 28: In context of the mass violence that broke out in Delhi, a part-time teacher, Souradeep Sengupta in the Department of Physics, Gurucharan College (G.C. College), Silchar allegedly made ‘derogatory’ remarks on ‘Sanatan Dharma’ in one of his Facebook post. It was further alleged that Souradeep even went ahead and described the Prime Minister of the country as a ‘mass murderer.’ It was on the basis of this allegation that a group of students of G.C. College led a protest demonstration raising slogans against Souradeep Sengupta in the college campus on Friday.
The students also submitted a memorandum to the Principal of G.C. College through the Head of the Department of Physics. A copy of the same was also marked to the Secretary of the Teachers Council of G.C. college, with the demand to terminate Souradeep Sengupta as early as possible.
Speaking during the protest demonstration, students of the college, Subhasish Choudhury and Snehangshu Chakraborty said, “Today the students of Gurucharan College organised themselves against such anti-Hindu approach of the lecturer and submitted a memorandum demanding the termination of that teacher.” They also stated that they would not allow Souradeep Sengupta to take any further classes in Gurucharan College.
Meanwhile, Rohit Chanda, a student of Gurucharan College lodged an FIR on behalf of the protesting students on Friday afternoon. He was accompanied to the Sadar Police Station by several other students of Gurucharan College, namely, Subhasish Choudhury, Karanjit Deb, Bijoyan Nath, Snehangshu Chakrabarty, Souvik Bhattacharjee and many more. The Police officials have assured the students of stern action against the accused, if found guilty. However, till Friday evening there was no information of any arrest made by the police.
Souradeep Sengupta has in the meantime deleted his post from his Facebook wall which created the storm. Later on, on Thursday late night, he wrote a post in his wall wherein he stated, “I appologise for any religious sentiments I may have hurt by my posts. I made some irresponsible comments about a communally sensitive issue. It was a lapse of judgement. My intention was not to insult any religion at large.”
