Condition of Black Fungus patient from Karimganj deteriorates, readmitted at SMCH

July 4: The condition of the maiden Black Fungus patient from Karimganj and detected at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) has worsened. As a result, he was readmitted at SMCH.

The 42-year-old patient from Karimganj was earlier admitted at SMCH) on 26 May and was initially suspected to be suffering from Mucormycosis (Black Fungus). On 3 June, 2021, the final test reports of biopsy and culture reached SMCH and it was found that he was a confirmed patient of Black Fungus. From the MRI report, it was found that along with one of his eyes, a part of his brain was also affected. So he was referred to Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) for better treatment. He was admitted at GMCH on 6 June. A medical board was also constituted with the senior doctors of ENT, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Medicine and Microbiology for the treatment of this patient. He got released from GMCH on 20 June.

The patient lost sight of one of his eyes, but otherwise, he showed signs of improvement. He then returned back to his house in Karimganj. But since the last 2 days, he exhibited several complications. As such, he was admitted at Silchar Medical College. Informing this, Dr Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH stated that the condition of the patient worsened and his treatment has been started.

Dr Bhaskar Gupta further stated, “Admitted this time in SMCH with complaints of bleeding from the nose and mouth ..started on injection Amphotericin b with oral antifungal agent posaconazole with insulin, injectable antibiotic and Iv fluids .. mri brain done on 03.06.2021 shows features of fungal rhinosinusistis with right optic nerve involvement .. nasal endoscopy and debridement done on 02.07.2021 ..endoscopy revealed necrotic tissue with extended upto skull base ..patient has received three doses of retro-orbital amphotericin b injection.” He further informed that the patient is being treat at SMCH as per state protocol and all supportive medication by a board of doctors.
