Coal Mine Tragedy: Massive multi-agency rescue operation launched

way2barak Feb 6::—An unfortunate incident has been reported at a worksite at Mynsyngat Village, Thangsko area of Elaka Sutnga, under Saipung C&RD Block, Meghalaya, on thursday, where a dynamite explosion occurred at a coal mine. The incident triggered an immediate emergency response, with search and rescue operations formally commencing at 9:55 AM on 6th February 2026.
A large-scale, coordinated rescue and response mechanism has been activated, reflecting swift administrative preparedness and inter-agency coordination. Multiple specialised teams have been mobilised, including SDRF, SRT and NDRF units, supported by medical response teams from Jowai and Shillong, along with ambulances deployed for emergency evacuation and treatment. BSF personnel with medical support infrastructure have also been deployed, while the Army and Air Force remain on standby to provide assistance if required.
Senior officials, including Sri Roktim Baruah, ADC & CEO, DDMA Cachar, along with the Circle Officer, Katigorah, and Field Officers (Disaster Management) from Katigorah and Silchar, are present at the location to oversee operations, coordinate response measures and ensure seamless inter-departmental support. The 1st Battalion NDRF has also updated regarding the deployment of its teams to the incident site in Meghalaya, strengthening the overall rescue and response framework.
As per verified information, six deceased persons from Cachar district have been reported and identified in connection with the incident. In addition, five injured persons have been admitted to Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH), where they are currently receiving medical care under close supervision.
The situation is being closely monitored at the highest administrative level, and all necessary support systems  including logistics, medical services, communication and coordination have been activated to ensure timely assistance, accurate information flow and effective response management. The Cachar District Administration remains fully committed to providing all necessary administrative and humanitarian support during this critical time.
