CM Himanta Biswa appeals to ULFA chief Paresh Baruah to come forward for peace talks

May 10: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma after taking oath on Monday stated that his government is committed to carry forward the peace and prosperity which Assam has been witnessing in the last 5 years. He appealed to the militant groups in general and ULFA in particular to come back to the mainstream giving up arms. He said, “I would request Mr Paresh Barua to come for open discussion giving up arms and help us in making a strong Assam.” The chief minister was briefing the media on a gamut of issues.

In an appeal to the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah, the new Chief Minister said that killings and abductions won’t solve problems, instead it is only through dialogues that problems could be truly addressed.

While replying to a query by a journalist, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “When I say that problems could be resolved through dialogue, I feel that it’s always a two-way process. Mr Paresh Baruah should come forward for it and similarly, we too should go to him. If both of us have the real urge for peace, than communication would not be difficult and the dialogues would be successful.”
