Cachar Police arrests BJP Kishan Morcha leader & 2 others for ‘illegal transportation’ of Burmese supari
Feb. 18: It’s been gradually revealed that the unholy ‘Supari’ (beetle-nut) syndicate has its wings spread over the entire Assam. Director General of Police, Assam, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta during his recent visit to Silchar stated that none involved in the supari syndicate will be spared. The Assam Police will play all out against those who are involved in the network. Inspite of the tough stand adopted by Assam Police, transportation of Burmese supari is still continuing.
On Thursday night, a truck full of Burmese supari which came from Mizoram was detained by the police at Lailapur and found around 125 bags of beetle-nut in the vehicle. On checking the documents, the police became suspicious and on this basis detained one Prabir Paul, who identified himself as the General Secretary of BJP’s Kishan Morcha, Guwahati. Along with Prabir Paul, two others Sanam Uddin Khan of Cachar and Subrata Dey of Hojai were also detained by Cachar Police.
Though the police has raised serious doubts about the documents of supari trade recovered from the vehicle, but BJP leader Prabir Paul, the owner of the consignment reached the Lailapur Police Station with some documents claiming the consignment to be legal. However, the investigating officers were not convinced and rather arrested the trio who were earlier detained.
Meanwhile, Prabir Paul said, “I am an active members of BJP and is also the General Secretary of BJP’s Kishan Morcha, Guwahati. I am a member of respectable party and hold a respectable post. So I just could not do any illegal work. I have legally procured the supari by following all import rules. I have given to the police all legal and valid import documents. I have paid Rs.17.50 lakh as duty for 10 ton supari to authorities at Champai in Mizoram as per the rules laid down by Assam Govt. I am confident about the law of the land and is hopeful to get released soon.”
Meanwhile, on Friday, Cachar Police produced the trio at the court. All of them were then sent to judicial custody.
