Faculty of Radhamadhab College distribute relief materials to flood victims in their adopted village at Bethukandi

June 8: The recent flood has affected a huge multitude of people in Cachar district. Although the river water has gone down considerably below the danger level, yet by then, many people were rendered homeless as river water flooded their home. Till now, those residing in riverside have not been able to come to terms with the losses incurred due to flood. As a good Samaritan, many individuals and organisations have come forward to help those flood victims.

The Principal and teachers of Radhamadhab College, Silchar too came out in support of the flood victims. To stand beside these people, they personally contributed and purchased food items for distribution. These were then made individual packets. The NSS wing of Radhamadhab College has an adopted village at Bethukandi in Berenga Part-IV, Silchar. During the recent flood, this entire area including houses of the people were submerged. Though the water has receded quite a few days ago, yet the loss incurred by the people of Bethukandi is immense.

Keeping this aspect in mind, the teachers of the college decided to distribute food materials among the flood affected people in their adopted village at Bethukandi. However, the main road to Bethukandi goes through the dyke besides river Barak. It normally takes around 10 to 15 minutes time to reach the adopted village at Bethukandi from Radhamadhab College at Sonai Road. However, during the flood, the dyke was broken and so now it requires around an hour to reach there through another route. The dyke has yet not been repaired.

Led by Dr Debashish Roy, Principal of Radhamadhab College, many teachers of the institution also went there on last Sunday (5 June, 2022) along with relief materials. There at Betukandi, these packets were distributed among the flood victims. The packets comprised of 4kg rice, half kg Masoor Dal, mustard oil, soyabean, potato,  biscuits, salt and packaged drinking water.

Radhamadhab College was helped in distribution of the materials by the members of Rising Youth Society. The food items were distributed among 100 families of the village. Expressing his views, Dr Debashish Roy said, “We have tried in our own little way to help the people in distress. We hope to stand besides you in the future also.” In his speech, Pinak Roy on behalf of Rising Youth Society thanked the college fraternity for distributing food items among the people at Bethukandi. He said, “You won’t just imagine the hardships that these people are in due to the flood. Everything has been washed away from inside the houses of the people. Water flowed over the roofs of many. This distribution of food items has definitely been a blessings for them.”

On speaking about their living condition, a local person said, “We have received very less cooperation from the government. Only once, we were given relief and that too it was very less. My family got around 1 kg rice, 200 ml mustard oil and dal. We drank the dirty water of the flood. We were not even given medicines for purifying water. We just can’t describe the condition in which we passed the days. We had to take shelter on the dyke along with all domesticated animals and vehicles. Today, from the core of our heart, we express our gratitude to all teachers and Principal of Radhamadhab College for helping us in this hour of need.”

Apart from Dr Debashish Roy, Principal of the College, the other teachers who also went there for distribution of relief materials are Sudarshan Gupta, Arunabha Bhattacharjee, Dr Ch Mani Kumar Singh, Dr Rahul Sarania and Dr SurjaSen Deb.
