Cachar chapter of Assam Academy of Mathematics celebrates International Day of Mathematics

March 14: The Cachar District Branch of Assam Academy of Mathematics celebrated the International Day of Mathematics on 14 March, 2021 in association with the Department of Mathematics, Cachar College Silchar. The day is also popularly known as Pi Day as 14 March in MMDD format is written as 3-14 which are the first three significant digits of the famous mathematical constant Pi.

The event began with a brief inaugural session where Dr. Sangita Saha, a life member of AAM, highlighted the relevance of the celebration and provided a glance of the day’s events. The welcome speech was presented by Dr. Debashish Sharma, General Secretary, AAM Cachar District. Dr. Avinoy Paul, HOD Mathematics, Cachar College presented a talk on interesting facts about the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio. This was followed short seminars by students of Holy Cross School Kabuganj, Ramanuj Vidya Mandir, Holy Cross School Silchar, Gurucharan College and Cachar College.

The celebration gave an opportunity to the students to express their mathematical knowledge in front of the mathematics community of the district. There were several interesting talks by the students on various topics like “Mathematics and us”, “Facts about Pi”, “Gabriel’s Horn”, “Collatz Conjecture”, “Fibonacci Sequence”, “Group Homomorphism”, “Fun with mathematics”, “Infinitude of primes” and “Non-Euclidean Geometry”.

The event saw a healthy discussion on several topics of mathematical interest. There were talks by  Kartik Paul, Guest Lecturer, Cachar College, Shomavo Chakraborty, Assistant Teacher, CCJC Palonghat School and by Dr. Debashish Sharma, Assistant Professor, Guruchran College. At the end of the event, certificates were distributed to the students for presenting short seminars.
