Flood water enters many new areas in Silchar town on Friday

May 20: Though the water level of River Barak at Annapurna Ghat and other places are gradually decreasing, yet flood water has entered fresh areas of Silchar town on Friday, raising the number of affected people. Since Friday afternoon, flood water engulfed Public School Lane, Shyamananda Ashram Road, Netaji School Road, Kanakpur, Madhurband and some other areas. Water has also entered into many lanes and by-lanes of these areas. The water level in these areas was gradually rising towards the evening.

After overflowing Rangirkhal, water entered inside many of the houses inside Public School Lane (Adi Shib Bari Road). Many those who were residing in ground floor n these areas had to vacate and shift elsewhere. Knee-level water has also accumulated inside the Public HS School. Meanwhile, after filling up the drains, water was gradually proceeding further. Areas inside the Gopal Akhra lane too started to inundate.

As the Rangirkhal was almost full with water, there are chances that it may overflow and inundate parts of Rangirkhari towards early morning, if the level keeps on increasing. Flood water has already entered inside houses at Malugram, Itkhola and Ghoniala since the last three days. Although power supply was steady at New Silchar area, but people of larger Malugram areas were devoid of electricity and supply water since last 48 hours.

As per report received from Assam Water Resource Department, river Barak at Annapurna Ghat, Silchar at 8 PM on Friday was flowing much above the danger level and was recorded at 21.24 metres. The danger level at this point is 19.83 metre. The water level is decreasing at 1 cm per hour.

Meanwhile, in view of the ongoing floods in Cachar, all Educational Institutions ( both Govt & Private) & Non- Essential Private Establishments of Cachar District shall remain dosed for the next 24 hours. This order shall be effective from 6.00 AM of 21st May, 2022 and will remain in force for next 24 hours. Deputy Commissioner cum Chairperson, District Disaster Management Authority, Keerthi Jalli has directed to restrict unnecessary plying of vehicles (two wheelers/ three wheelers/ four wheelers) which is causing much difficulty in rescue & relief operations in the district. This order shall be effective from 6.00 AM of 21 May, 2022 and will remain in force for next 24 hours.
