BJP face defeat at the hands of independent candidates in Hailakandi Municipal election

March 9: There has always been a debate among common people as regards the importance of political parties or the personal image of the candidates during the Municipal election. Probably the reply to this question was given by the voters during the election to the Hailakandi Municipal Board, the results for which was declared on Wednesday.

Out of the 16 Municipal Wards in Hailakandi, 10 were won by the independent candidates, whereas BJP could register its win in only 6 wards. The independent candidates won in Ward No. 1, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 16, whereas, BJP won in Ward No. 2, 3, 4, 6, 15 & 15.

It needs mention here that out of the 10 independent candidates who won the Municipal election in Hailakandi, Uma Choudhury (Ward No.8), Raju Chakraborty (Ward No.9), Jharna Bhowmick (Ward No.10), Shampa Sen Gupta (Ward No.12), Sumitra Debnath (Ward No.16) sought tickets from BJP. However, being refused, they contested the polls as independent candidates and managed to come out victorious. That proves that the BJP has taken wrong decision in selection of the candidates which led to the failure of the party in registering their win in atleast 5 more wards.

However, it will be a wait and watch now to find out whether the independent candidates would form the Board or whether BJP will form the Board with the support of the independent candidates.
