Birth centenary of Late Gauri Shankar Roy celebrated by reaching out to the poor & needy

July 12: Sunday marked the birth centenary of Late Gauri Shankar Roy. He was four times MLA from Katlicherra constituency in Hailakandi district. Late Gauri Shankar Roy was a renowned trade union leader and a freedom fighter of repute. To commemorate his exploits, ‘Gauri Shankar Roy Birth Centenary Celebration Committee’ was formed.

The Committee, after its formation had decided to conduct one programme per month for one long year. As such, the committee started functioning since 12 July, 2019 and completed 11 such successful programmes. Various types of activities including philanthropic acts were carried on by the ‘Gauri Shankar Roy Birth Centenary Celebration Committee’  throughout the year.

The committee earlier chalked out an elaborate programme to be held on 12 July, 2020. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was not feasible to do the celebration amidst pomp and splendour. However, abiding by the COVID protocol, a simple programme was organised on Sunday at Itkhola, Silchar. Saree, dhoti and face masks were given to 30 pre-selected poor and needy people of the locality.

Speaking during the occasion, Sanjeev Roy, son of Late Gauri Shankar Roy and General Secretary of Gauri Shankar Roy Birth Centenary Celebration Committee said, “We on behalf of the Celebration Committee will very soon convey the date of official closing ceremony, which will ofcourse be celebrated in a grand way. A souvenir will also be released then with a detailed account of the year long celebrations done by us. It will also contain the life history of this great man. We convey our gratitude to all those who came forward and joined hands to make the mega event a great success.”

Apart from Sanjeev Roy, present during the programme were Rajendra Roy, Sahabuddin Ahmed, Usha Roy, Chandrabati Roy, Ranabir Singh, Maya Dixit, Bandita Trivedi, Nonda Roy, Subham Roy, Manoroma Dixit, Sanjiban Roy, Rohan Roy, Upashana Roy, Prosonno Das among others.
