Biological Threat! Letters contaminated with coronavirus may be sent to political leaders
Nov. 20: In its latest set of guidelines, the International Police Organisation, commonly known as Interpol has warned law enforcement agencies across the world including India to beware of letters being contaminated with the novel coronavirus amid the pandemic. Interpol has warned that letters contaminated with the virus, which causes COVID-19, could be sent to political leaders and individuals.
In its latest guidelines, the Interpol said that despite limited risks, few cases of threatening letters allegedly contaminated with COVID-19 targeting political figures have been reported. There was however no specific mention of any instance. Attempts at deliberate contamination by spitting and coughing on surfaces and objects has been reported.
A few cases of threatening letters allegedly contaminated with Covid-19 targeted political figures have also been reported. This modus operandi, Interpol said, can also be used to target other vulnerable groups. However, the international agency did not mention any specific instances of contaminated letters sent to politicians.
Interpol said that instances of individuals claiming to sell contaminated samples of body fluids online have also been reported, thus causing a major health risk. It said postal and front-desk services should be informed of biological threats posed by suspicious packages and follow the regular protection measures.
