Bilpar, Chamragudam, Mondir Dighi, Chandicharan Road also engulfed in flood water

May 20: Though the water level of River Barak at Annapurna Ghat and other places are gradually decreasing, yet flood water has entered fresh areas of Silchar town on Friday, raising the number of affected people. Since Friday afternoon, flood water engulfed Bilpar, Chamragudam, Mondir Dighi, Chandicharan Road Public School Lane, Shyamananda Ashram Road, Netaji School Road, Kanakpur, Madhurband and some other areas. Water has also entered into many lanes and by-lanes of these areas. The water level in these areas was gradually rising towards the evening.

At Bilpar, water has entered inside Lomba Dighi, opposite Indraprastha Hotel, where Mitali Sangha does Durga Puja. After filling the Dighi (large pond), water has entered inside houses of the people along the banks. At night, our correspondent visited this area and found that there was no electricity over there. The adjoining Graveyard Road which goes towards Chamra Gudam was also flooded. Areas near Radhamadhab Akhra was also filled with water. A few people were also found to catch fish with nets in front of Laskar Lane near Indraprastha Hotel.

A similar condition was also noticed near Mondir Dighi. The road was already flooded. The son-in-law of language martyr Birendra Sutradhar said to our correspondent that knee-level water has entered into their house. He further lamented that the public representatives of the locality are not paying heed to their condition. Water in the area was gradually advancing and flooding new areas within the locality.

The entire Chandicharan Road was also flooded. Rangirkhal was found to be full of water. Due to dumping of garbage, the water at Rangirkhal was found to carry along it also such garbage. At Rangirkhari point, the Rangirkhal was full upto the brim. As the Rangirkhal was almost full with water, there are chances that it may overflow and inundate parts of Rangirkhari towards early morning, if the level keeps on increasing.

Moreover, towards midnight, it was observed that water has also started to flood the main streets of Public School Road. The drains were overflowing with flood water. Water also entered inside Public HS School. Flood water has already entered inside houses at Malugram, Itkhola and Ghoniala since the last three days. Although power supply was steady at New Silchar area, but people of larger Malugram areas were devoid of electricity and supply water since last 48 hours.

As per report received from Assam Water Resource Department, river Barak at Annapurna Ghat, Silchar at midnight on Friday was flowing much above the danger level and was recorded at 21.22 metres. The danger level at this point is 19.83 metre. The water level is decreasing at 1 cm per hour.

Meanwhile, in view of the ongoing floods in Cachar, all Educational Institutions ( both Govt & Private) & Non- Essential Private Establishments of Cachar District shall remain dosed for the next 24 hours. This order shall be effective from 6.00 AM of 21st May, 2022 and will remain in force for next 24 hours. Deputy Commissioner cum Chairperson, District Disaster Management Authority, Keerthi Jalli has directed to restrict unnecessary plying of vehicles (two wheelers/ three wheelers/ four wheelers) which is causing much difficulty in rescue & relief operations in the district. This order shall be effective from 6.00 AM of 21 May, 2022 and will remain in force for next 24 hours.
